Ultrasound: a non-invasive alternative
In spite the extensive number of treatment modalities available, glaucoma remains a complex pathology to deal with. Several types of drugs currently available (eye drops) are prescribed as first line treatment and often come with constraints such as non-compliance, difficulty in instilling the drops, possible intolerance and side effects.
In order to stabilize the intraocular pressure, it is often necessary to change or add extra drops. When medical treatment is no longer effective, laser treatment (trabeculoplasty) may be proposed.
Failure to stop progression often leads to recourse to an invasive operation, e.g. filtering surgery (trabeculectomy, sclerectomy) or to the insertion of an implant inside the eye (sometimes associated with cataract surgery). Diode laser treatment represents the ultimate option for refractory glaucoma.
